Clinical Experience & Research
A Heed Ophthalmology Fellow, Dr. Kaufman regularly improves our patients’ lives with procedures like laser vision correction (LASIK and PRK), pterygium surgery, and the treatment of ocular surface cancer. As a cornea specialist, Dr. Kaufman performs corneal transplants (PKP, DSAEK, and DMEK) and corneal crosslinking, and treats a variety of corneal disorders, including keratoconus, dry eye, and corneal infections.
In addition to working with patients, Dr. Kaufman is a noteworthy photorefractive laser instructor. He is frequently invited to conduct research and lectures at national and international ophthalmology meetings. Dr. Kaufman has more than 400 publications and presentations to his name, including 11 chapters on cornea and refractive surgery; he is also the editor of two cornea textbooks and serves on the editorial board of three ophthalmic journals.
Furthermore, Dr. Kaufman is a clinical professor and previous Vice Chairman of Ophthalmology and Co-Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He also served as the Medical Director of Eye Care Services for the M Health Fairview system..Â

Dr. Kaufman is on the board of directors of the Eye Bank Association of America. He serves as Chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Cornea Knowledge Base Committee and Co-Chairman of the Midwest Cornea Association, and associate Medical Director of the Minnesota Lions Gift of Sight Eye Bank. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Cornea Society and the Board of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology.Â
